Juddering When Pulling Away

What Does Juddering When Pulling Away Feel Like?

Juddering when pulling away is a shaking or jolting sensation that happens as your car moves off from a standstill. Instead of pulling away smoothly, the car shudders, bounces, or jerks forward in quick bursts. It often happens in first gear and may disappear once you are up to speed.

Some drivers describe it as the car kangaroo-hopping. Others notice a vibration through the pedals or the seat as they set off. Either way, it is not normal and it usually means something needs attention.

What Is Causing the Juddering?

There are several things that can cause a car to judder when pulling away. Below are the most common causes. Only a proper inspection can confirm exactly what is wrong with your car.

Worn or Slipping Clutch

This is one of the most common causes of juddering when pulling away. The clutch is what connects the engine to the gearbox. When you lift your foot off the clutch pedal, the clutch plate grips and transfers power to the wheels. If the clutch plate is worn, contaminated with oil, or starting to fail, it can grip unevenly and cause the car to judder as you pull away.

A clutch replacement is often needed once the clutch starts to behave this way, as the problem rarely improves on its own.

Contaminated Clutch

Even if the clutch plate itself is not worn, it can become contaminated with oil from a leaking seal or gearbox gasket. Oil on the clutch surface stops it from gripping cleanly, which causes shuddering as you pull away. In this case, the source of the leak will need to be fixed at the same time as the clutch.

Engine Mounts in Poor Condition

Engine mounts hold the engine in place and absorb vibration. If one or more mounts are worn or broken, the engine can move around more than it should when power is applied. This movement is felt as a judder or thud as you pull away from a standstill. Worn engine mounts can also cause a knocking sound when accelerating.

Faulty or Sticking Throttle Body

The throttle body controls how much air enters the engine. If it is dirty or sticking, the engine may not receive a smooth and steady supply of air when you first accelerate. This can cause hesitation or shuddering as you try to pull away, particularly from cold.

A car diagnostic check can identify whether an engine management fault is contributing to the problem.

Spark Plug or Ignition Fault

If one or more spark plugs are worn or not firing correctly, the engine can misfire when load is placed on it. This is most noticeable when pulling away because the engine has to work harder from a standstill. A misfiring engine can cause shaking, stuttering, or a loss of power alongside the judder.

Spark plugs are a standard part of a routine car service, so keeping up with regular servicing can prevent this.

Driveshaft or CV Joint Problems

The driveshaft transfers power from the gearbox to the wheels. At each end of the driveshaft sits a CV (constant velocity) joint, which allows the shaft to flex as the suspension moves. If a CV joint is worn or the protective boot around it has split and allowed dirt and water inside, it can cause juddering when power is applied from a standstill.

Uneven or Low Tyre Pressure

In some cases, noticeably uneven or very low tyre pressure can contribute to a shuddering sensation when pulling away. This is worth ruling out first as it is the simplest thing to check.

What Should You Do?

1. Check your tyre pressures. Before anything else, check that all four tyres are at the correct pressure. This only takes a few minutes at a petrol station and rules out the simplest possible cause.

2. Pay attention to when it happens. Does it only happen in first gear? Does it happen every single time, or just occasionally? Does it come with a smell, a noise, or a warning light? These details will help our mechanics narrow down the cause much more quickly.

3. Notice whether there is a smell. A burning smell when pulling away often points to clutch wear or slipping. If you notice this regularly, it is a sign that the clutch is being put under significant stress and needs to be looked at soon.

4. Do not keep trying to pull away sharply. If the car is juddering when you pull away, avoid revving the engine hard in an attempt to get it moving more smoothly. This can accelerate clutch wear or put additional strain on other components that may already be under stress.

5. Call First Auto Centre. Give us a call on 020 4539 0131 and describe what you are noticing. Our team can advise you straight away and, if needed, arrange 24/7 breakdown recovery to bring your vehicle to our East Ham garage.

6. Get a proper diagnosis. Juddering when pulling away can come from several different places in the drivetrain. Our mechanics will inspect the clutch, engine mounts, driveshafts, ignition system, and engine management to find the root cause and give you a clear, honest assessment.

Not Sure What Is Wrong?

Let Us Take a Look.

Juddering when pulling away can start as a minor annoyance but often points to a fault that will get worse if left alone. Bring your car to First Auto Centre in East Ham and our experienced team will carry out a thorough inspection to find out exactly what is causing the problem.

If you do not feel safe driving the car, we offer 24/7 breakdown recovery to get you and your vehicle to us without the stress.

FAQs

Not always. While the clutch is the most common cause, juddering can also come from worn engine mounts, a faulty ignition system, driveshaft faults, or an engine management issue. A proper inspection will identify where the problem is coming from.

It depends on how bad it is. A very mild judder may allow you to drive carefully to a garage, but you should not leave it for long. If the judder is severe, comes with a burning smell, or is getting worse, you should have the car inspected before driving it further.

It varies quite a lot depending on driving style and conditions. A clutch can last anywhere from 50,000 to over 100,000 miles. Town driving and stop-start traffic tends to wear a clutch faster than motorway driving. If your clutch has never been replaced and the car has high mileage, it is worth having it checked.

In most cases, yes. A slipping or worn clutch will continue to deteriorate, and other causes such as CV joint wear or engine mount failure will also worsen over time. Getting it looked at early usually means a simpler and less costly repair.

This is difficult to tell without a proper inspection. A clutch fault tends to be most obvious when pulling away in first gear, whereas an engine misfire or ignition fault may cause juddering at other times too. Our mechanics can identify the source quickly with a visual inspection and diagnostic check.
