Your Questions
MOT Testing FAQs
An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is an annual inspection required for vehicles over three years old in the UK. It ensures that vehicles meet the minimum safety and environmental standards to be roadworthy.
Your vehicle requires its first MOT test three years from the date of its first registration. After that, it must be tested annually.
The maximum fee for a car (Class 4 vehicle) MOT test is £54.85. However, many garages offer the test at a lower price.
If your vehicle fails, you'll receive a 'refusal of an MOT test certificate' (VT30). You'll need to repair the issues identified before retesting. Some garages offer a partial retest for free or at a reduced fee if repairs are done within a specific timeframe.
Driving without a valid MOT certificate is illegal. The only exceptions are driving to a pre-booked MOT test or to a garage for repairs after failing an MOT, provided the vehicle is roadworthy.
